We set aside a day or two for the boardwalk, and it feels like a more relaxed trip.  The Wildwood Crest section starts just about where the boardwalk ends. It's still a close distance, even walking distance from some of the hotels. We jump on the tram and head to the busier section of the boardwalk when we want to play.
